# Fixer

> Fixer is a reliable, lightweight real-time and historical foreign exchange (forex) rates REST API, used by developers to power currency converters, e-commerce pricing, financial dashboards, and analytics tools. It delivers JSON-formatted exchange rate data for 170+ world currencies, aggregated from 15+ trusted financial sources (primarily the European Central Bank) and updated regularly for accuracy. Historical end-of-day rates are available all the way back to 1 January 1999. Responses include a UNIX timestamp, the base currency, the date, and a rates object, with JSONP callback support and 256-bit SSL encryption on every tier. Fixer is part of the APILayer suite (one account, one API key, one dashboard across the APILayer product family).
A free API key is available at https://fixer.io/signup/free/monthly — the Free Plan includes 100 monthly API requests with a EUR base currency, hourly-updated latest rates, historical data, and SSL encryption, restricted to non-commercial use; paid plans add commercial-use rights, base-currency switching, the conversion endpoint, standard support, and higher request volumes. Paid tiers are Basic ($14.99/month, 10,000 requests, hourly updates), Professional ($59.99/month, 100,000 requests, 10-minute updates, time-series endpoint), and Professional Plus ($99.99/month, 500,000 requests, 60-second updates, fluctuation endpoint), with discounts on annual billing. To call the API, append your access_key as a query parameter. The base URL is data.fixer.io/api. A single lookup is one HTTP GET request: data.fixer.io/api/latest?access_key=YOUR_KEY. The default base currency is EUR unless overridden with the base parameter (base-switching requires a paid plan); the symbols parameter limits results to a comma-separated set of 3-letter currency codes to reduce bandwidth. Core endpoints include Symbols (list of all supported currencies), Latest (most recent real-time rates), Historical (rates for a specific past date via /YYYY-MM-DD), Convert (convert an amount with from, to, amount, and optional date), Time-Series (daily rates between two dates via start_date and end_date, Professional and above), and Fluctuation (change and margin/percentage between two dates, Professional Plus and above).
